Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus^(A)

¹⁴ Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot^(B)—went to the chief priests ¹⁵ and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver.^{(C) 16} From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

⁴⁵ Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour^(A) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. ⁴⁶ Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested^(B)

⁴⁷ While he was still speaking, Judas,^(C) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. ⁴⁸ Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” ⁴⁹ Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”^(D) and kissed him.

⁵⁰ Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”^[a](E)

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him.

¹⁰ Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve,^(A) went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.^(B)

¹¹ They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

³ Then Satan^(A) entered Judas, called Iscariot,^(B) one of the Twelve. ⁴ And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard^(C) and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. ⁵ They were delighted and agreed to give him money.^{(D) 6} He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.

Jesus Arrested^(A)

⁴⁷ While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him,

⁴⁸ but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
